Many years ago, my sister (-in-law), Judy, Retired2stamp, invited me to a Stampin' Up Party. I was drawn to the 6X6 recipe card swap our local group was doing and had wanted to scrapbook too. I wasn't really interested in card making because I had witnessed my brother (in-law) Ed fold up a handmade card and put it in his pocket. I almost fainted and I didn't even make the card. But after a few parties, I was hooked and now make more cards than I had ever thought I would. My most recent passions are ATCs, tags & altered art. As you look through my blog I hope you can see how I've grown in my crafting ability!

Hmmm...Smell the Cinnamon!

My mojo was pretty much gone for the December Recipe Card Class at The Craft Shack so Mary Ann & Lisa gave me a hand in designing the card.  This recipe was shared by our stamping friend, Karen at our annual stamping event.  They were delicious!
It's pretty basic except for the "cinnamon buns" at the bottom.  I wanted to place something on the recipe card that represented cinnamon buns so we used the Tim Holtz Peppermint Shifter Stencil.  I mixed Ranger Texture Paste with drops of Tim Holtz Walnut Stain Reinker then added cinnamon spice.  I didn't measure anything but kept experimenting until I got the color I wanted & a consistency to spread over the stencil.  We then sprinkled some chunky glitter like elements over it to represent the pecans.  After letting it air dry, the edges of the strip were inked & popped up.  And yes, you can smell the cinnamon...mission accomplished!!

The 3 layer base is SU Kraft, Cherry Cobbler & a Maja Design DSP.  The cook, from a retired My Favorite Things Stamps Set "What's Cooking", was colored with Copic markers, die cut with an oval, inked then popped up.  The natural twine bow was added with a glue dot.

We were happy how it turned out & the smell makes you hungry!!

Sea Turtle Candle

For Christmas this year our stamping group decided to have a Secret Santa gift exchange.  We were to write down a few suggestions or hints to help the Secret Santa select our gift.  I drew my SIL Pam & the only hint she gave was she liked the color green.   I was lucky to know that she recently purchased a painting with a sea turtle for her living room.  I had stamped on a candle many years ago but recently discovered people were using battery operated candles.  After watching several YouTube videos, I decided to make one for her.

Any brand of battery operated candle can be used, it just needs to have a waxy surface so it will slightly melt when heated.  If there are batteries in the candle they should be removed before heating.

White tissue paper was cut to fit the candle then  the turtle from Designs by Ryn Sea Creatures 1 was stamped in Memento Cocoa on the dull side.  A paper mask for the turtle was placed on the tissue paper then several of the sea plants were stamped in Memento Potter's Clay & Bamboo Leaves.  The turtle was colored using Copic YG61, YG63 &  E44 then E21 for the sand at the bottom.

The tissue paper was torn, leaving an edge around the image then centered on the candle with the shiny side against the candle.  A piece of wax paper was cut wide enough to cover the image & long enough go around the candle with some left in the back to hold onto.  The wax paper was placed over the stamped image smoothly & held tight.  A heat tool was used on the image, leaving it just long enough to see the image change appearance. The wax paper was carefully removed, making sure the image was melted to the candle.  If necessary it can be heated a little more.  Using a finger, the tissue paper cam be smoothed out but be careful, it's may still be hot.  If the candle is heated to long it may become bumpy.

I tied a piece of twine around the bottom to finish it off.

I was happy how it turned out for my first try!  TFL!

Tis the Season

This is the Christmas card I did for my stamping friends.  I decided to use a buffalo plaid since it's "in" this year and a shifter stencil because I hadn't played with them yet.  I think they were both good choices!  Sorry this one is a little crooked but it was the only one I had left!!

The background was made by stamping a piece of 5 1/44 X 4'  Stampin' Up Cherry Cobbler CS in VersaFine Black Onyx Ink with Concord & 9th's Plaid Background Stamp.

Instead of using a stamping platform, I laid the stamp on my Tim Holtz Glass Media Mat.  It worked as a giant block!
After laying the cherry cobbler CS over the inked stamp, it was covered it with piece of copy paper.  I rolled a Tim Holtz Brayer over the copy paper instead of using my hand.

This gave a nice even image.

I wanted to use one of the new shifter stencils & decided on the Tim Holtz Tree Shifter Tree Stencil.  A tip Tim has for using the shifter stencils is to paint the back of the stencil with Tim Holtz Black Soot Paint.  The paint will fill in the laser cut outline of the image so you will be able to see where to line it up.   REMEMBER to quickly wipes away the paint with a wet paper towel so just the laser lines are filled in.  If you don't once the paint dries it will be permanent!

I started by positioning Stampin' Up Crumb Cake CS under the stencil & taping it down to hold it in place.  Using a Ranger Blending Tool, it was inked with Tim Holtz Twisted Citron Ink.  Using taping the stencil on the edge, I was able to raise it up to make sure it was completely inked.
The stencil was cleaned & dried before moving onto the next color. The 1st image on the CS was lined up under the painted laser lines.  See how painting the lines helped?  The next set of trees were inked with Tim Holtz Peeled Paint.
The edges were inked with Tim Holtz Walnut Stain Ink.

I decided to add "snow" using Dina Wakley White Gesso.  I put a little gesso on my media mat & sprayed it with water until it was a thin consistency.  After placing the panel in Tim Holtz Splat Box, I used a brush to spatter the panel.

I stamped "Tis the Season" from Stampendous Tis the Season Stamp Set at the top of the panel & added it to the plaid card front.  I'm not sure where I got the reindeer charms but threaded jute string though the hole & wrapped the jute around the card front & secured it in the back with tape.  It was then added to the Stampin' Up Crumb Cake card base using double sided tape.  I added a small matching bow over the reindeer with a glue dot.

I made 19 of these & it really didn't take very long.  TFL!!

Watch Out For Spiders

Judy, Lisa & I had a good time designing this recipe card for a class at The Craft Shack.  Judy had the recipe & it was perfect for our October class & I made them as a treat for the class.

Starting with SU Pumpkin Pie CS cut to 5 3/4" X 5 3/4, the spider web was stamped with embossing ink then heat embossed with silver sparkle enbossing powder.  The edges of the CS were distressed with black soot ink.  It was then adhered to black CS cut 6 X 6.

Using a stamping platform tool, the trick or treaters were stamped with jet black archival ink.  Using a stamping platform is the only way to go because you can re-stamp it if you don't get a good image.

The tree & ghost house were die cut from black CS.  Lisa added several elements to the back of the ghost house including cheesecloth & yellow CS in the windows plus purple CS for the front door with a black dot for the door knob!  The smoke coming from the chimney was cut from vellum then inked with hickory smoke & adhered with a glue dot.  The ghost house was popped with dimensionals.  Two trees were stacked together & adhered using a fine point glue pen.

The recipe was torn then sponged around the edges with black soot & adhered to the pumpkin pie layer.  The spider was stamped in black soot over the spider web & recipe.  It needed a little sparkle so a red dot was added to the spider.

Below is a photo of the cupcakes & not only were they delicious but fun to make too!

What a Catch!

The September recipe card class at The Craft Shack was a recipe from a friend of mine & is what I'd call comfort food!

The 2 layers of Stampin' Up CS were cut Tempting Turquoise CS 6X6 & Whisper White CS 5 3/4 X 5 3/4.

The background was made by randomly swiping Tim Holtz Distress Cracked Pistachio Ink Pad over the white CS.  This gives the effect of swirling water.  The underwater foliage from Tim Holtz Sea Life stamp set was randomly stamped in evergreen bough.

Charlie Tuna & his trademark symbol came from the Internet.  He was colored with Copic markers & fussy cut then popped up with dimensionals.

A hole was punched in the matted recipe & an Eyelet Outlet Fish Hook was added then a line was drawn with a silver marker for the fish line,

It needed a little bling so I picked out some clear sequin from Neat & Tangled Mermaid Tail Sequin Mix to appear as the bubbles.

Love Those Boats!

This recipe card was for the August class at The Craft Shack

It was a very simple recipe card using Stampin' Up retired DSP, Whisper White CS & Certainly Celery CS.  The bling was a silver nail head I had in my stash.  The Stamps by Judith's large colander was stamped in Versamark then heat embossed with clear embossing powder.  It was fussy cutt out then popped up with dimensionals.  I'm not sure where the tomatoes & zucchini stamps are from but they were stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black Ink then colored with Copics R24, R27, YG23, YG63, YG67  then fussy cut out & adhered to the back of the colander before it was added to the card.

Have A Holly Jolly Christmas

I'm usually not one for 3D paper craft projects but since it's a Christmas ornament I was in.  I made 12 of them for a Christmas ornament swap at our annual shoebox event.  The theme was Have A Holly Jolly Christmas so this die couldn't have been more perfect!

I started with a 3" wooden hoop & took it apart.  The inside hoop was traced onto the back of the cardstock.  The front of the cardstock has holly leaves & berries.

I fussy cut all the circles but don't ask me why I didn't use my Cricut.

I ran a thin line of adhesive around the edge of the inside hoop & added the card stock over it.  They were then set aside so the adhesive was completely dry.

I trimmed the card stock as close as I could.

I used a file to clean & smooth the edges.  I did this by going down over the edge at an angle.  A dusty job but it's kinda fun!

The edges were inked with frayed burlap then the hoop was reassembled.

I cut 3X3 pieces of SU Real Red cardstock & back it with Stick-it.  This is a double sided adhesive.

I used my Sidekick to die cut Have A Holly Jolly Christmas by Creative Expressions Festive Craft Dies.

Because the cardstock had Stick-it on the back, I removed the release paper from the die cut to reveal an adhesive backed die cut.

I centered the die cut on the cardstock that had been adhered to the hoop.

I cut out 4 sets of holly leaves & 2 sets of holly berries for each ornament from Tim Holtz Coredinations Kraft Core Seasonal Paper using Tim Holtz Mini Holiday Greens Die Set.

For each side of the ornament, I arranged 2 sprigs of holly leaves & 1 stem of holly berries.  They are adhered them together with mini glue dots.  Isn't that a cute glue dot dispenser?

The holly & berries were then adhered to the top of the hoop with another glue dot.  They are very delicate but can be rearranged a little since the glue dot is flexible.

I cut 9" of 1/8" ribbon, threaded it through the bracket at the top of the hoop & made a loop to hang the ornament.  I then tied another 9" of ribbon around the metal top of the hoop & tied a bow then trimmed the ends.

Susan's Technique Birthday Tag #2

Each month a group of my stamping friends get together to celebrate birthdays & September is Susan's birthday month. She was not able to attend our Technique Tags Tim Holtz Style get together at The Craft Shack in September so instead of a traditional birthday card I decided to make her technique cards in the form of a birthday tag. I'm so glad she was thrilled to be able to add them to her idea-ology worn binder notebook!

In September we revisited Tim's 12 tags of 2016 from February when he had done the monoprint technique from June 2014 & the embossed texture paste technique from March 2015.

The embossed texture paste technique is just a little more involved & I have to say this is one of my favorites! I'll tell you what I did but I suggest you follow the link above to Tim's instructions.

I randomly placed a few small pieces of symphony tissue tape on a #8 manilla tag to create a little more interest. To create the background, I put abandoned coral, seedless preserves & twisted citron paint on a craft sheet, spritzed it with water then swiped & tapped the tag into the paint. I spritzed the tag again before drying between layers & dabbed off any excess ink until I achieved the look I wanted. The tissue tape will resist the paint & show through the paint. Remember once the paint is dry its pernment so clean it up right away.

Once the paint was completely dry, I stamped "happy birthday" from Handwritten Sentiments then masked it before stamping images from Classics 1, Classics 3, & Classics 4 in jet black archival ink.

The images were stamped again on masking paper & cut out to cover anything I didn't want to be covered with embossing texture paste.

I sprayed the back of the Gradient Dot Stencil with Pixie Spray to hold the stencil in place & placed if over the masked tag. This has a very light tack & clean off nicely.

The embossing paste was spread evenly over the stencil & then the stencil was carefully lifted off. The stencil & palette knife need to be cleaned right way.

The embossing paste was immediately covered with gold embossing powder with the excess removed & put back in the jar. The project was set aside while the embossing paste dried. Once it was dry, it was heated to melt the embossing powder. If the embossing paste isn't dry it will crack & the white embossing paste will show through the gold.

That's pretty must it.

Susan's Technique Birthday Tag #1

Each month a group of my stamping friends get together to celebrate birthdays & September is Susan's birthday month.  She was not able to attend our Technique Tags Tim Holtz Style get together at The Craft Shack in September so instead of a traditional birthday card I decided to make her technique cards in the form of a birthday tag.  I'm so glad she was thrilled to be able to add them to her idea-ology worn binder notebook!

In September we revisited Tim's 12 tags of 2016 from February when he had done the monoprint technique from June 2014 & the embossed texture paste technique from March 2015.

The monoprint technique is a very easy technique using distress inks, water & a stencil on watercolor paper.  I'll tell you what I did but I suggest you follow the link above to Tim's instructions.

The mini ink cubes work best for this technique.  I used peacock featherssqueezed lemonade & ripe persimmon to ink the back of gradient square stencil.  Tim suggests inking the back of the stencil in the event words, etc. are used that need to face a certain way.

Generously mist the inked stencil with water then lay it on the smooth side of the distress watercolor-paper.  Cover with a paper towel & press down on the surface so the ink absorbs into the watercolor paper.  Lift the stencil & dry with a heat tool.

To finish it off, I stamped "happy birthday" from Handwritten Sentiments then masked it before I stamped an images from Classics 1Classics 3, & Classics 4  in jet black archival ink.  It was then added to a #8 kraft tag.

That's it!!  Easy peasy!

Pop Up Flower Pot Card

I needed to make a couple of birthday cards for my stamping friends so I decided to make these adorable pop up flower pot cards.  I saw them on SplitcoastStampers & there is an excellent tutorial which includes step-by-step instructions & a video by Chris Slogar.  They are easy to make but a little time consuming.

The bases & bands are SU Certainly Celery & sponged with the same color ink.  The sentiment is from SU Petite Pairs stamped with Versafine black ink & punched out using SU's oval & scalloped oval punches.

The flowers pots are SU Really Rust cardstock & then dabbed with a sponge in the same color ink to give it a little texture.

The flowers are Tim Holtz Tattered Florals & I had to cut 12 for each card.  Two die cuts are stacked for each flower & there are 3 flowers on each side of the flower pot.  So a total of 24 dies cuts!!  The flowers were cut from SU Wisteria Wonder, So Saffron, Crisp Cantaloupe cardstock then stamped in their coordinating ink using Impression Obsession Min Patterns #3 Stamp Set.  The center of the flower is SU Early Espresso punched with a 1/2" circle punch & popped up with a 3D foam squares.

The leaves are from Tim Holtz Garden Greens & die cut from SU Certainly Celery.

The flowers & leaves are attached to some window sheet material with glue dots.

Check out the link above to the tutorial to see how easy it is to put these together!!

Three Little Pigs

I love putting my favorite recipes on 6X6 scrapbook style cards.  I can't remember where I found this recipe but it just needed a farm scene!

I didn't want to pop any of the images up so I did a lot of masking using Gina K Designs Masking Magic Sheets. The stamp set is an old SU set, On The Farm, I found at a flea market!

I started by stamping 3 pigs & the barn on the masking sheets & cut them out just inside the line.  If you do this, when you stamp over the masked image you won't have any gaps in your stamping.  But if you do just use a marker to touch up the lines.

On white cardstock cut 5 1/2 X 5 1/2, I stamped the pigs with Memento Tuxedo Black Ink then placed the making sheets over the images.  Then I stamped the barn over the 1st masked pig so it appears it is walking in front of the barn.  Next I placed the mask over the barn & stamped the tree from Tim Holtz Just Believe Stamp Set several times so it appears the trees are behind the barn image.  The trees were inked with Peeled Paint, wiped the trunk off & added ink using a Frayed Burlap marker for the left tree.

Leaving masking on the pigs & barn, I used a mini ink blending tool to carefully add the background colors in Tim Holtz Distress Inks, Tumbled Glass, Peeled Paint & Squeezed Lemonade.  I did the sun before the sky.

After removing the masking, I colored the barn & pigs using Copic markers & added glossy accents to the roof.  The base is 6X6 SU Cherry Cobbler cardstock & the 5 3/4 X 5 3/4 cardstock mat is white.

TFL at my Three Little Pigs & hope you give masking a try!
